VH1 to begin airing I Love VH1’s I Love the 80’s by John Roper, Staff Writer

NEW YORK — VH1’s newest program, which airs weekdays at 8 p.m., 10 p.m., and 12 a.m. (ET/PST) features celebrities who appeared on I Love the 80’s, which can be seen weekdays at 7 p.m., 9 p.m., and 11 p.m. (MT), as well as people who may have watched it.
“I remember that...” begins the guy from The State who is now on Ed and some hidden-camera show that has probably already been canceled—maybe Thomas Ian MacDonald—but who can be best described as ‘smarmy.’
“I had a lot of free time then, and they paid me 10 bucks an hour to give them sound bites on whatever they prompted me with. At one point I sat there and played with a Rubik’s cube for like an hour. They recorded it, and I got paid.”
Lionel Richie, currently attempting to revive his “Endless Love” career by appearing on a Rob Zombie album, was the narrator for the regular “Love Songs” feature of the show.
“It took barely an hour to record my segments, and they stretched the whole thing out to 10 one-hour episodes.” He paused, then said, “Or were they half-an-hour long? I don't know.”
Tim Funtle of Dayton, Ohio, who appears on the program as a viewer remembering I Love The 80's, had this to say: “It was kind of hard to miss, seeing as how it replaced all of VH1's other programming. I hear they're making an I Love the 80's channel.”
When reached for comment regarding the rumor of an I Love the 80’s channel, an anonymous VH1 insider said, “Good idea.”
Despite criticism, VH1 remains confident that I Love I Love the 80’s will prove to be a ratings success.
“I could tell as soon as they contacted me to be on the show that it was bound to be a classic,” said Dee Snider, the front man from Twisted Sister. “I mean, I didn't have all of my teeth filed into spikes just to fade into obscurity.” |
