SXSW — A Diary by Ty O'Henderslice |
 |
Hey music fans! It’s been my dream to visit Austin for the SXSW music festival, and this year I finally made it! I ordered my wrist band, hopped on a plane, and spent the week listening to sweet tunes. Check it out!
WEDNESDAY
9am Got in line for the Death Cab show. My buddy said it was a good idea to get in line early, so we did it even though the show wasn’t until 10pm.

10:15pm Still in line. The door guy said we had a chance of getting in if 50 people inside decide to leave, so we’re gonna wait it out.

10:58pm Only one person has left.

12:05am The show is over, but we heard some of it from outside. The bass player rocks!
THURSDAY
10am Spent thirty bucks on brunch at Roaring Fork. But it was worth it, because I got to see the lead singer from Mars Volta — he let me pay him for his autograph!

10:05am Realized I just gave $50 to a roadie.

11:30am Got in line for the Sufjan Stevens concert at Buffalo Billiards. I’m certain I’ll get in for this show. I’m the only person in the wrist band line!

3:45pm I am still the only person in the wrist band line. I’ve been jamming out to the Seven Swans EP on my iPod in preparation for the sweet acoustic goodness. SUFJAN WOOO!!!!

8:00pm A few people have begun to trickle into the badge line. I’m not worried though. Show is in two hours. SUFJAN FOR PREZ!

9:30pm Over 200 people have shown up in the badge only line and are immediately let into the show.

10:00pm The show starts and I’m still outside.

10:35pm With my ear against the window, I am able to faintly detect Sufjan’s delicate vocals combined with his whimsically off-kilter instrumentation on “Chicago.”
FRIDAY
11:30am Woke up. I overslept because I was up way late using my official SXSW binoculars to watch the Kaiser Chiefs do Jager shots at MoMo’s.

1:00pm Got in line for the Minus the Bear show at Emo’s.

2:30pm Took my shirt off so I could get some sun.

7:00pm Bouncer woke me up and told me to go to the hospital for first degree burns. Yeah, right!

8:00pm I saw Minus the Bear! They peaked their head out of the door and invited the eight extremely attractive girls behind me inside. I must be really close!

9:38pm Didn’t get into the show, but I think I saw either Elijah Wood or Kate Moss from behind a fence. SXSW is truly amazing!
SATURDAY
6am Showed up at Stubb’s super early. I will not miss Lyle Lovett bringing his weathered charm and intimate catalog of songs to a crowd of die hard fans.

7am Saw Lyle Lovett head to his hotel room to go to bed.

10:00am Lyle Lyle bo bile, banana fanana fo file, me my mo mile, LYLE!

1:00pm Started reading The Da Vinci Code while waiting.

5:45pm I cannot put this book down! I’m going to my awesome hotel room for some privacy.

9:00pm Finished the book. I cannot wait to see Dan Brown’s uncompromising vision brought to the big screen — via the capable hands of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, no less!

11pm This Magic Bullet infomercial is both entertaining and informative.

1:10am Ordered the deluxe Magic Bullet set, Roomba, and Total Gym.

1:30am Lights out! Man, SXSW sure was fun, but I don’t wanna miss my flight. Lord knows I can’t handle another day of this rock star lifestyle! I can’t wait for next year!
